Zona Fronteiriça by Camila Lobos Díaz

Final Presentation AiR Carpintarias 2020

Dec 10 - Jan 10 2021

Exhibition view, Eduardo Sousa Ribeiro 2020
Geopolitical boundaries (borders), metaphorically, are lines of social, cultural and political demarcation in which we only exist in a dichotomist logic of in and out. In that panorama it seems urgent to cultivate feelings of belonging. Are our roots exclusively circumscribed to the place where we were born? Bodies are real while nations are conventions, an arbitrary and fictional separation, made by drawing fictional lines on continents, on seas, on bodies. Zona Fronteiriça (Borderlands) is a resistance exercise, a choral space, intimate, but collective, we walk, we move, we migrate, we land, but we never finish to arrive. The project was possible thanks to the support of each of the participants of the fases of this project; onces, gatherings, conversations, interviews, walks.Thank you very much for building this Zona Fronteiriça, where we come together, meet, cohabit and coexist. Thank you Nida, Popi, Farhana, Thamina, Imran, Ali, Taufzil, Rabindra, Balde, Carlos, Sadja, Milan, Mostafa, Sufia, Ganesh, Rabin, Lakshmi, Ismail, Shabbbir, Demba, Mamadou, Shah, Wajeha, Jorge.”

On December 10th opened Zona Fronteiriça, the final presentation of the artist residency Camila Lobos Díaz, the chilean artist selected for the AiR Carpintarias Visual Arts residency, with the support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

This residency, which happened for the third consecutive year, aims to connect the  multicultural communitynear Carpintarias to the Cultural Center and contemporary art. As a leitmotif it serves the idea and reflection about the concept of community. What is 'community' and how is it built; how can we build 'community' through contemporary art?

Migration and the idea of community are central themes in the artist's practice. Her work aims to make the socio-political context visible, exploring the relationship between power and visibility and how art reveals these elements and dynamics are beyond our reach. The artist approaches interactions between space and human relations - the micropolitics. She deepens the idea of context as a symbolic space, where projects are not only installed, but also emerge from there. In this residency she developed an investigation about the idea of belonging in these communities.

Zona Fronteiriça is an audiovisual installation resulting from the exercise of recompilation of stories that make up the community around the project.
