BODYBUILDERS | Rafael Alvarez promotes a choreographic training and creation project for people over 55 & seniors, resulting from an artistic exchange and collaboration between 20 participants from Paris and Lisbon who together will be challenged to explore and develop a joint choreographic proposal with public presentation in Lisbon. The training, research and creation process is structured through two intensive laboratories to be held in Paris (25-28 April) and Lisbon (7-12 May) culminating in the presentation of a final show in Lisbon (12 May, Carpintarias de Lázaro). The WAVE DANCE LAB will have an extension in Palmela integrated in the Micro FIAR Festival program (24 to 27 July, Cine-Teatro São João).
The WAVE Project (Portugal-Japan-France-Malaysia) continues the choreographic research and creation initiated in 2017 by choreographer Rafael Alvarez in Japan. In addition to the creation and circulation of the solo "NO INTERVALO DE UMA ONDA" (2017) and the duet "ON THE DISTANCE WAVE" (2018-19) in Portugal, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Laos.
A founding image motivates the creation of WAVE project, remaining invisible, but present throughout the different creations: “The Great Wave of Kanawaga” - an iconic work by the Japanese painter Hokusai created in 1830 and reproduced from mid-1870 through a series of lithographs based on the traditional Japanese print technique, known as ukiyo (literally, “floating world”). In this floating world, nothing is too small or insignificant to escape our attention.
This project of shadows, evocations and masks, that Hokusai's wave allows to embody, is a double invitation to travelling and stillness, immersing East and West, in a coexistence of readings and images, where less is more.
WAVE DANCE LAB +55 Years invites all its participants and audiences to immerse themselves in a trip to Japan to discover, through a silent dialogue, the simplicity and power of the main materials and materials present throughout this creation - Light and Shadow, Body and Paper, they contribute to the exploration and construction of a dance show that is located on the border between an inhabited installation, a choreographic landscape and a monochromatic movement ritual.
