Jorge Molder, Jeu de 54 cartes, 2017

The notion of game is an essential element in Jorge Molder’s creative process.
The game appears as an activity that incites us to an heuristic experience of things, which in turn concedes availability to anything that deviates from conventions, categories and structures of pre-established understanding.

Applied to the art field, it’s a notion that certifies art as a practice which formulates its own “rules”, neglecting deliberate intention, systematization, previous discourse, in favor of the experience of possibility, spontaneity and interpretation.

Jorge Molder (Lisbon, 1947) lives and works in Lisbon. He graduated in Philosophy at University of Lisbon (1972). Jorge Molder is an exceptional artist, probably one of the artists best known Portuguese and considered one of the most important photographers contemporary art. His work is full of mystery, using in most times your own face, hands and body to reflect on what is insoluble, the world of thoughts and dreams. Strongly influenced by literature and philosophy, Molder developed a taste for the “dark places of the soul”, a certain “disturbing strangeness”, the map of our desires and ambiguities.

Jeu de 54 cartes

The Cultural Center Carpintarias de São Lázaro is very pleased to present the exhibition Jeu de 54 cartes by Jorge Molder, one of the most recent series of works by the Portuguese artist. Based on the typical structure of the French card deck, made up of four suits of thirteen cards each, the photographer created a series split into six parts: four suits (Faces, Hands, Pieces, Ghosts) in a total of fifty-two pieces, plus two Jokers and a picture the artist called “Gabarito” (Gauge).
The notion of play is an essential element in Molder’s creative process.

After all we find 55 play cards, not 54 in this exhibition...

"The game and, correspondingly, chance and intuition, point to key issues in this research in which Jorge Molder correlates the work of demultiplication of (his) figures with the essential dilemmas of our relationship with images. As the images seem to deny the expectation of a single and original Self, first and authentic, because each individual is also constituted by his declines and substitutes, at the same time, they alert us to the paradoxical relationship between the image and each figure it presents. What's truth and what is factitious, in that body, that gesture, that expression? How to distinguish what separates and what juxtaposes between image and representation, between reality and fantasy, between the Self and the other (s)? ” Sérgio Mah - curator of the exhibition held at MIEC - International Museum of Contemporary Sculpture, Santo Tirso.
