Showroom by Los Carpinteros

February 2 - May 1, 2017

CIAC – Capital Ibero-Americana de Cultura 2017

Curated by Alda Galsterer and Verónica de Mello

The building of art-deco façade that was, until the 90s, a space for industrial labor of wood work and that had to close after a fire, now reopens as a space for artist creation, rebirthing as the new cultural center of Lisbon.

Following this idea of genesis, beginning, or even ressurection, Alda Gasterer and Verónica de Mello, curators of this exhibition, invented the cuban artistic duo Los Carpinteros to present an installation that would be itself the premiere of these praised artists in Portugal.

This exhibition is part of  Lisboa Ibero-Americana Capital of Culture 2017 and it’s a unique oportunity to see in Lisbon the work of the internationally famous cuban duo.

Co-production REDE art agency and Carpintarias de São Lázaro.

LOS CARPINTEROS are a cuban artist duo from Havana, Cuba, constituted by Marco Castillo Valdes (Camagüey, 1971) and Dagoberto Rodriguez Sánchez (Caibarién, 1969) both graduated at Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), in Havana.

Marco Antonio Castillo and Dagoberto Rodriguez Sánchez live and work between Havana and Madrid, developing a poetic work, critical and humorous, with strong impact in contemporary culture.

This exhibition marks the opening of Carpintarias de São Lázaro Cultural Center which intends to be a dynamo for art in this area of Lisbon.

The concept developed by the curators for this exhibition lies in the idea that wood work has a strong symbolic aspect in western culture, the image of the capenter is extended to that of constructor, as an object-maker, as of creator.

In addition, there is the issue of time - beggining, genesis - so central and important to this presentation, here analyzed by this installation that crystallizes the first moment after an explosion, through a suspension of wood pieces on the air, that in this case belonged for years to different homes in Lisbon and that possibly here returned to their origin, place of creation. An exhibition that deals with and explores the concepts of time, creation and genesis.
